Meta launched its microblogging social platform in July 2023, notably in the United States and the United Kingdom. The new competitor of X experienced meteoric growth during the launch, reaching the milestone of 100 million users in just a few days.
This exceptional rise can be attributed to the striking force of Meta. The company has a total of more than 2.19 billion users across all of its areas of activity, and has astronomical financial resources. This last point allows it to still not offer advertising within the application for the moment. The platform could very well have seized the opportunity to sell advertising space from the start, but it still prefers to wait for a higher milestone, so as not to scare away users already present.
In December 2023, the Threads application appeared in France, as well as in other European countries, which gained more than 30 million users during the same period. Now, according to the latest figures, Threads has at least 130 million active accounts. To compare, X has 245 million.
In order to continue its momentum, Meta regularly integrates features into the application. The last one announced by the firm is the development of an API, which she apparently started a few months ago. The latter is now in Beta phase, and some accounts can already benefit from it.
Meta Announcement
In a publication on the platform, a Threads engineer announces:
Over the past few months, we’ve expanded the Threads API to enable creators, developers, and brands to manage their Threads presence at scale and easily share new ideas with their communities from their favorite third-party apps. — We are currently testing with a small number of partners […] as well as some independent developers. Although we are limiting access to the beta at this time, we hope to make the API widely available by the end of June.
Why API Threads Is usefull ?
Given the growing number of users Threads, businesses and media have every interest in setting up there. In the comment part of the publication concerning the API announcement, a user testifies:
Hi ! I work for a company that helps transit agencies (large agencies in Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver, etc.) provide real-time updates to passengers. Agencies have already asked us to publish on Threads, and we’d love to offer this option as soon as possible! Can we request early access?
This testimony shows a concrete case of the use of the API. Once it is connected to a third-party service such as that of a transport network, it can inform users automatically, in real time, of current events.
