The Transport Ministers of the European Union have agreed this Monday that they can start driving cars from the age of 17as long as it is accompanied by a person over 24 who has had the license for at least five years, although the final regulations will still have to be negotiated with the European Parliament.
Thus, the 17 year old driver could only drive in the country in which the license was issued and its companion, over 24 years old and with at least 5 license, nor could he have lost his driving license at any time in the last five years. Under these, and other premises, Brussels proposes lower the age by one year to start driving in Europe.
The proposal is well received from the National Association of Driving Schools. “It is a good measure, as long as you receive good training,” says Fernando Lara., vice president of this group, who, referring to the mandatory companion, adds that “at 24 years old you begin to be more responsible and more mature.”
The EU also proposes to reduce from 21 years to 18 the age of the fire truck drivers, maintenance of public order and those that undergo road tests for approval. “It is very positive, because we need many drivers. They are getting older and we do not find generational change and, in addition, this can also alleviate youth unemployment,” he says. Julio VillaescusaPresident of Fenadismer.
And, among other things, European Transport Ministers also suggest that if there is withdrawal of driving license be extended to all States, penalize new infractions such as breaking the safety distance or making dangerous overtakes and update the rest times for professional drivers.
