Android is working on a new functionality that will scan application activity for phishing and if the threat is confirmed, it will send the information from said app to its antivirus, Google Play Protect.
Currently, there is little protection against phishing, a type of cyber attack in which Criminals clone a legitimate app or website to obtain users’ private dataand for that reason, Google is taking action on the matter preparing Android to detect malicious applications.
This is because we have just learned that the big G is working to implement a new function in Android that will warn you of phishing attacks on your mobile.
Android will detect if an app is suspicious of phishing
The guys from the specialized media Android Police discovered in Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 a hidden page that hid a new function called scanning for deceptive apps (search for deceptive applications), which will be responsible for verifying “the activity of an application in search of phishing or other deceptive behavior”.
According to the Mountain View company, this new security measure for Android will scan the applications you have installed on your mobile using a “analysis that runs privately directly on your device” and in the event that it detects phishing or other type of malware it will send “part of the app information to Google Play Protect to confirm the threat and warn app users”.
As you can see in the screenshots that we leave you above, you can access this new anti-phishing function through the following route: Settings>Security and privacy>More security and privacy>Security and to activate it you will only have to enable the switch that is to the right of the option use scanning for rogue apps.
Likewise, after analyzing the decompiled source code of the latest Android 14 Beta, the colleagues at Android Police discovered that to carry out phishing detection, Android will use a new system service called “ContentProtection”, which will be responsible for detecting when an application tries to display a password field or when it asks the user for sensitive data such as username, phone number, email address or login details.
