what is the reason and what can we do to fix it

at the time of access the internet from home most of us use WiFi capabilities of our routersespecially when we want to do it from mobile terminals, but also from equipment such as Smart TV, smart speakers, home automation systems, etc.

It is an almost essential function in our digital lives that still becomes more important at Christmas timemoment in which we take the opportunity to communicate massively with our loved ones by sending and receiving all kinds of messages, videos, audios, photos, etc.

The key dates arrive, such as Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve and then once again we return with the classic collapse of connections, but not only in the networks of mobile operators, but also Wi-Fi at home is worse than ever. and applying the usual tricks seems not to work. What is happening and what can we do to resolve it?

Lights, decorations and electrical appliances generate interference

If there is something that characterizes Christmas, it is that we usually decorate the house with different decorations, lights of multiple shapes and colors, LED strips for remote control etc. But sometimes these small lighting elements can be the cause of disconnections, slowdowns and occasional cuts in the Internet connection.

As we saw in his day, the problem seems to reside in the poor manufacturing of some cheap components (switches, capacitors, fluorescent lights, cables with little electromagnetic shielding, etc.) that emit high amounts of radio frequency signals that interfere with WiFi networks, degrading coverage and maximum speeds.

The solution in this case is simple and fast: turn off lights temporarily or move them as far as possible from the router and the room in which we have problems.

It is also common on these dates that we do a intensive use of all household equipment and appliances, some of which are wireless and can broadcast in the 2.4 GHz band causing some interference with WiFi. This is the case of wireless keyboards, Bluetooth gadgets, wireless headphones, remote and game controls, wireless subwoofers and speakers, cordless phones, etc. In these cases the problem ends as soon as we stop using them, but it may be difficult to locate the source.

I have tried the craziest tricks to improve my home WiFi: these are the ones that have worked for me and the ones that have not

Another separate case is that of users who use PLC networks at home with WiFi access points to bring the Internet to the most remote rooms. In these cases we are not only talking about possible interference in the home wireless spectrum, which in general will be few, but we will have interference in the electrical network and thus a reduction in speed.

plc

As we saw in its day, PLC networks are very sensitive to load variations in the home electrical network, which means that we can have cuts or speed drops when we plug in equipment such as ovens, radiators, washing machines, dishwashers, etc. And at Christmas, many of these appliances will be on at the same time and we may notice how the connection suffers.

Your neighbors may be to blame

Another typical case of problems with WiFi is caused by family gatherings, but not only ours that we have inside the house, but those that take place in the neighbors’ housessomething very common as we already saw in this other article.

At Christmas, the WiFi networks adjacent to our home are probably more in use than ever, almost constantly, which can mean that the channels are much more saturated and in extreme cases we have more difficulties to connect. What can we do?

interference

In these situations and in order not to complicate ourselves too much, we can try to find which channels are freer using apps like WiFi Analyzeravailable for free for Android and Windows 10 (in this case you just have to look for it in the app store), software that gives us this information by showing the signal strength of each frequency band.

Then we just have to access the router through the classic link http://192.168.1.1 in the web browser and we change the WiFi channel to one that is less saturatedas we already explained in depth in this article.
