Weekly review and outlook: Two power trackers and Zelda dominate ahead of CES 2023

In the last week of last year, ComputerBase focused on testing two power trackers, the large community survey, Zelda: Ocarina of Time based on Unreal Engine 5.1 and the upcoming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. The editors wish you a good start into the new year 2023.

Two stream trackers and a large survey

Among the tests and reports published over the past week, one outlier has more than doubled the hits of the second most read content in the category within the first 24 hours. We are talking about the test and field report on two electricity trackers in order to use the real-time data collected from the meter to take a close look at your own electricity consumption and maybe find one or the other power guzzler. “Conscientious use of energy is the order of the day“, the introduction already makes it clear and the ComputerBase readers underline this with lively interest and many comments.

Specifically, the Tibber Pulse and a homemade Raspberry Pi and IR read head competed against each other, with both solutions working and having their own advantages and disadvantages. The tracker from the Norwegian electricity supplier Tibber is an uncomplicated option with a better app, while self-construction for experienced users can score with permanent data storage and protection of privacy. However, both current trackers are currently poorly available.

Meanwhile, this year’s large community survey, which once again probes the hardware and software used within the community, made it into second place in the most-read tests and reports of the 52nd calendar week. The comprehensive questionnaire is open until January 26th, the only requirement is a ComputerBase user account. After the end of the survey, the interesting developments are summarized again. There is no advertising background; it’s about making the hardware and software equipment and its development more visible in the community. There are no data available to third parties.

From Zelda and a new old graphics card

One outlier also stands out in the news and notes: The report on the fan remake of the legendary role-playing game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time published by Nintendo in 1998 attracted a great deal of interest. That according to metascore The video game that is still the best rated video game of all time revolutionized the genre and was recently given a special by ComputerBase in the C:B_retro series. A specially adapted version of the unofficial – but previously tolerated by Nintendo – new version was released free of charge as a Christmas present, with which the game based on Unreal Engine 5.1 can be tried out for the first time. However, the 3.6 GB preview “Ocarina of Time – Christmas Special” linked in the message requires the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime environment.

Apart from that, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti – and with it the former GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB – casts its shadow. After the data sheet for the new old graphics card was already an open secret before Christmas, information on the price and the expected performance has now leaked out to the public from the board partners and Nvidia itself. According to this, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti should start in the USA for 799 US dollars, whereas the canceled RTX 4080 12 GB should cost 1,099 euros in Germany. In view of this and the price reduction on RTX 4000 in the meantime, a price of less than 1,000 euros is suddenly realistic in this country.

The new year brings the first major technology fair

Clarification in this regard will not be long in coming, the Nvidia keynote for CES 2023 begins on January 3 at 5:00 p.m. In general, the coming week will be all about the Consumer Electronics Show, which will officially be held from January 5th to 7th, 2023 in Las Vegas. The editors will be there and report in detail on all new announcements. ComputerBase will also come up with the usual extensive tests and benchmarks for the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti in due course.

At this point, the editors would like to point out again the Christmas puzzle 2022, in which readers who are particularly keen on puzzles can still try nine questions until the end of today. In contrast to the annual St. Nicholas competition, the prize isn’t a high-end PC, but a little something for real nerds.

With this reading material in our luggage, the editors wish you a relaxing Sunday and all readers a good start into the new year!

Barcelona City Council has launched a challenge for companies, startups, universities and innovation centers to present urban solutions that have as objective reduce motorcycle-related accidents. The chosen projects, which will be applied in the city, are part of the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility initiative that promotes pilot tests to improve mobility.

Barcelona is one of the European cities with a greater presence of motorcycles and mopeds which represent 33% of the total census of vehicles, and motorcycle drivers account for 86% of the seriously injured, according to the balance of road accidents for the first half of 2022. With the aim of reducing accidents and increasing road safety in the city, these entities have launched this initiative to find and apply innovative solutions on the streets of the city, with the collaboration of the Tomorrow.Mobility show organized by Fira and the EIT Urban Mobility (European Union initiative).

The challenge, launched internationally, counts with an economic endowment of 200,000 euros, which will correspond to a maximum of 80% of the total amount of the winning solutions. The projects can be aimed at resolving the accident rate from behavioral innovation, that is, with solutions related to driving habits, and from technological innovation.

The execution time of the selected proposals is 18 months, of which the pilot phase must be a minimum of six. The proposals must be applicable in a real environment in the short term and must define, in this sense, its deployment space. In addition, it must achieve quantifiable results in relation to the safety of motorcyclists and third parties, which are lasting over time. Its innovative and differential component will also be valued both in the methodologies and resources used and in its execution.

This call is aimed at companies, startups, universities, research centers, technology centers, associations and foundations that have until next March 1 to present their projects. A committee of experts will assess the technical quality of the works presented and will choose the winning solutions that could be applied in Barcelona during that same year. The projects will have international projection with their participation in the next edition of Tomorrow.Mobility, which will be held next November together with the Smart City Expo World Congress at Fira de Barcelona.

Microsoft Teams integrates into Elgato Stream Deck

Elgato Stream Deck

The Elgato Stream Deck is a very interesting peripheral that we had the opportunity to analyze at the time, and that allows you to create different shortcuts and functions that will be associated to each of the available buttons. It allows you to create different usage profiles, and we can switch between them in a very simple way.

For example, we can assign to a button that directly opens a web page, to run a specific application, to perform a specific action and we can also set specific commands and download completely free applications. It is a very interesting solution, especially for professionals who are dedicated to content creation and streaming.

The point is that the Redmond giant has released an official plugin that allows you to integrate an Elgato Stream Deck device with Microsoft Teams. This plugin was announced by the American company earlier this week, but it was officially launched yesterday. The installation process is quite simple, but we can find more information in the official Microsoft forums.

Once installed, we can use the Elgato Stream Deck to access shortcuts and specific functions that will improve our user experience with Microsoft Teams. Thus, for example, we can blur the background in a video call by pressing a button, and we can also assign other specific functions such as raising and lowering our hand, muting ourselves, recording, and even to show live reactions during meetings.

This new plugin enhances the value of the Elgato Stream Deck, making it a very interesting solution for those who work remotely and have to participate in frequent video calls and events. Obviously it is still an excellent option for content creators and streaming professionals as well. I remind you that it is available in different versions, and that the standard MK.2 model with 15 buttons is priced at €149.99.
