MADRID, September 13 (Portaltic/EP) –
Unity Technologys has announced a change in its business model whereby the video game graphics engine that until now offered with different subscription plans, including a free one, will accept the payment of a fee for game downloads.
The Unity engine is offered in two software versions, Unity Editor and Unity Runtime. The latter is what allows games to run on users’ computers and work at scale.
The changes announced by Unity Technologys mainly affect Unity Runtime, since the company will introduce, starting January 1, 2024, the payment of a fee based on the downloads of a qualified game made by end users.
Games qualified to implement this rate must have exceeded a minimum revenue threshold in the last year and have exceeded a minimum number of lifetime installs. These thresholds “are high”, so that they do not affect developers who have not managed to distribute their game on a large scale, as detailed in a press release.
“The program was specifically designed this way to ensure that developers can be successful before the installation fee goes into effect,” the company said in a post shared on X (Twitter).
