The World Cup has reminded me how badly we watch football on Smart TVs. And nothing happens, but there is a solution

Between the pandemic and the fact of being able to watch all the football at home, it had been a long time since I had seen games in bars or with friends at home. In the Qatar 2022 World Cup, I have done it in multiple locations outside the warmth of my own home, and what is more important for the reason for this article: outside the warmth of a well-adjusted TV.

Because yes, despite the fact that for many years almost any manufacturer has included a Film / Cinema mode and more recently Filmmaker, by default Smart TVs keep arriving configured in modes that are incorrect if what is intended is to achieve good color reproduction based on how the image is conceived from production.

We see football wrong: green is not radioactive. But about tastes there is nothing written

Watching World Cup matches at friends’ houses and in bars reminded me how badly we see football. Vivid/Vivid/Standard/Sports/Game/HDR Effect mode (the name depends on each brand) “destroys” the image in movies if what . To all this we must add software improvements such as dynamic contrast, noise reduction, artificial sharpness turned up to the maximum, etc. Not to mention motion smoothing options.

In football things are even worse. The green of the field becomes absolutely radioactive. And at this point we have to talk about tastes. It is one thing what the standards and norms used by the studios and filmmakers of a broadcast are delimited so that there is always coherence between all kinds of content and screens, and what each user likes is another.

This is what football looks like in Vivid mode on an LG OLED C9. It’s little exaggerated for what I’ve seen on other TVs.

As was the case with smartphone displays over the past decade (and is still the case today), many users preferred not the better-calibrated panels from brands like HTC or Apple, but Samsung’s ultra-saturated Super AMOLED. And it’s totally acceptable., because there is nothing written about tastes. And watching football at home is not an act of professional content editing, but enjoyment.

When switching screen modes at friends and family’s houses, few wanted to get out of Standard or Live modes. And it’s acceptable, but not realistic

With picture modes like Cinema, Movie or Filmmaker we see football in the closest way to how it is issued from the realization. Accustomed to seeing soccer with very vibrant colors, seeing soccer as it should be seen according to the norm comes to seem like something lifeless, dull.

Movies

This is how football looks in Cinema mode. It seems dull, but that lawn has much more to do with what I see when I go to Benito Villamarín.

Radioactive green and sharp field lines turn to pale green and less bright lines and image in general, and a priori, much less attractive to most eyes, especially if they are not used to realistic colors on television.

Watching Spain beat Costa Rica 7-0 on TVE UHD was better than the game itself. I never thought that DTT would give this quality in the World Cup

But the truth is that in a live match in a stadium, green is not seen as many televisions show, or as many people like, but rather duller, as those “correct” modes we talked about show.

The Simpson

The Simpsons already anticipated how we were going to see the Qatar 2022 World Cup matches.

Just like in the movies, when we get used to correct facial colors instead of reddish or bluish, we can’t go back. I can no longer go back with the green of football, but I understand who wants to stay watching the pitch as in the radioactive farm of The Simpsons. The best thing you can do to see the World Cup well is tune in to TVE UHD or use Gol Mundial UHD. Regardless of what your tastes are, you will see it with the best possible quality
