Notion could launch soon an alternative to Gmail and Google Drive after the purchase of Skiffa startup that, in addition to offering some services that the San Francisco-based company already offered, such as a calendar or a document manager, has an email client and a file storage platform in the cloud.
They are precisely two of the services that Notion does not yet have available, since the management software allows users to use a calendar as an alternative to Google Calendar from the beginning of 2024, after it acquired Cron in June 2022.
Now, and although Notion has not yet confirmed anything in this regard, it is very likely that after the purchase of Skiff the startup launch your own email client with end-to-end encryption that competes against Gmail, as well as a cloud file storage manager that serves as an alternative to Google Drive. Both services will likely integrate with Notion like the calendar platform does.
There are no details on how much Notion Skiff has bought for, although in a post on its blog, the company has confirmed that the team at the startup that started by creating an alternative to Google Docs, will become part of the Notion team.
This is Skiff, the startup that has acquired Notion
Skiff was founded in 2020 by Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg, who managed to raise up to 14.2 million dollars in two rounds of financing, says TechCrunch. Investors include companies such as Sequoia Capital, as well as John Hennessy, the current president of Alphabet, and Jerry Yang, former director of Yahoo.
The services offered by Skiff stand out for their simplicity and, above all, for their privacy, because all its platforms have end-to-end encryption. In fact, Notion has always been closely monitoring Skiff, as confirmed by Akshay Kothari, the company’s director of operations.
“Skiff started appearing on our radar at Notion from the beginning. I actually tried to contact you in 2020, when he was building his Docs product. We never connected then, but I followed your progress. Then a few months ago, Ivan and I were talking and Skiff came up again. I downloaded all the products you guys had created and was really impressed by the attention to detail,” he mentions.
Interestingly, Akshay also realized that Skiff’s headquarters were located at the same location where Notion originally had its offices.
