What if French youth were really less and less attracted to sex? A study reveals that half of young people have already avoided sex to watch a program on Netflix or another SVOD platform.
Netflix subscribers can access a large catalog of films and series in just a few clicks. Of course, we should not publish its competitors Amazon Prime Video or even Disney+, but the platform with red and black tones remains the leader in legal streaming in the world.
Netflix is still worried about the growing popularity of illegal downloading, it remains in a dominant position on the market. Especially among youth. A study shows that a large number of them even prefer launch a series or film on Netflix rather than having an intimate relationship with their other half.
Young people prefer to watch Netflix than have an intimate relationship
Last summer, a study revealed that one in four Americans prefers watching Netflix to making love. Young French people also opt for their series and films on the platform rather than intimate relationships.
Among young people under 35 living as a couple, half of men (and 42% of women) admit to having already avoided sexual intercourse to watch a program on an SVOD platform.
Netflix and other streaming services are not the only mediums that young people favor for sex. 53% of men under 35 living as a couple prefer to play video games rather than have an intimate relationship. Considering the video game releases of 2024, they should be satisfied. 48% will surf photo or video sharing social networks to avoid sexual relations, according to an Ifop study for LELO*.

These trends are not really surprising, since the sexual activity of the French population is decreasing overall. In addition, more than a quarter of young people aged 18 to 24 who have been sexually initiated (28%) have not had sex in the last 12 months, i.e. five times more than in 2006. Data which coincides with the drop in the rate birth rate in France, which pushed Emmanuel Macron to use the term demographic rearmament.
According to the study, all these figures which may seem worrying are actually rather positive. “ After years of hypersexualization of society, the 2010/2020 decades mark the beginning of a new cycle where the constraint to have a sexual life to “pleasure” or “like everyone else” becomes less strong. “. The survey shows that women no longer feel the obligation to satisfy their partner’s sexual desire, which constitutes an important step forward.
