Surface Laptop SE: $299 student notebook with Windows 11 SE

The rumors about the Surface Laptop SE with the customized Windows 11 SE operating system have come true. For the education sector, Microsoft has presented a corresponding notebook for 249 US dollars in the USA. The Surface Laptop SE will probably not be available in Germany, but Dynabook relies on Windows 11 SE.

The Surface Laptop SE was developed by Microsoft for so-called “K-8 students”, i.e. pupils from kindergarten age from 5 to 6 years up to the 8th grade at around 14 years. Priced at $249 before tax, it’s the cheapest Surface product ever released. Accordingly, high-end components cannot be expected, but Microsoft still wants to squeeze the maximum out of the budget. And on top of that, Windows 11 SE is a customized operating system for the education sector.

Repairs should be able to be carried out on site

The notebook is said to have the same keyboard as the other Surface products and is therefore also suitable for longer texts. The development also focused on repairability so that local IT administrators can carry out the repairs themselves. Core components such as the display, battery, keyboard and mainboard should be easy to repair on the spot by the staff. The components are accessed via non-hidden screws on the bottom of the laptop.

11.6-inch, Intel Celeron, 16-hour runtime

Measuring 283.70 × 193.05 × 17.85 mm (W × D × H), the Surface Laptop SE is a compact notebook that weighs 1.11 kg and displays its content on an 11.6-inch LC display with 1,366 × 768 pixels. Performance is provided by an Intel Celeron N4020 (2K/2T) or N4120 (4K/4T) from the Gemini Lake Refresh generation with 4 GB or 8 GB DDR4. eMMC with 64 GB or 128 GB serves as storage. Microsoft specifies a battery life of 16 hours, which was determined with the notebook’s basic configuration, a display brightness of 150 cd/m², activated WLAN and the use of the Edge browser and Microsoft Office.

Connections for USB-A, USB-C and jack

A sufficient number of connections that are not too exotic are important in the school environment, which is why the housing offers USB-A, USB-C and a 3.5 mm jack each. An external monitor or projector can also be connected via the USB-C port, provided it is a newer model. The WLAN module from Intel integrates Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 LE. Other features include a 1 MP 720p webcam, a single microphone and stereo speakers.

Windows 11 SE instead of Chrome OS

The “attack” on the education sector is more to be understood as an attack on Google with its cheap Chromebooks, which are outstripping other providers such as Apple and Microsoft, especially in the USA, although Apple with the basic model of the iPad for the favor of teachers and students courts.

Similarly, Windows 11 SE is Google’s competitor to Chrome OS and was also developed “cloud-first”, i.e. with a focus on online services from Microsoft. This starts with the provision and setup with Windows Autopilot, which is intended to make customized images for individual devices superfluous and shifts the entire management of the notebooks to the cloud.

Microsoft Store and widgets are going away

Windows 11 SE comes with expanded control over installed applications, much like what happened with Windows 10 in S mode, only now Microsoft is taking a slightly different approach. In S mode, only applications from the Microsoft Store could be installed, which in turn is not even included in Windows 11 SE. Instead, IT admins can choose from a Microsoft-curated list of third-party apps, with support for Chrome and Zoom, among others. The widgets and snap layouts have also been removed from the operating system, so that apps can only be arranged side by side on the screen. By default, applications start in full-screen mode so that maximum attention is paid to them. Chrome extensions can also be installed on your own Edge browser because these are in demand in many schools. In normal Windows 11, this feature is disabled by default.

Other notebook vendors with Windows 11 SE

The operating system is only intended for new notebooks in the education sector and not for separate distribution. Corresponding systems are planned by Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, Fujitsu, HP, JP-IK, Lenovo and Positivo, whereby Intel and AMD processors will be used in these devices. Ten notebooks configured accordingly can already be found on Microsoft’s website in the USA.

While the Surface Laptop SE has not yet been announced for Germany, Dynabook is pushing ahead in Germany with the Satellite Pro E10-S, which also offers 11.6 inches and is to be offered worldwide in the course of the first quarter of 2022 at an as yet unknown price.
