📅 What release date for Squid Game season 2?
Although no official date has been announced yet, it has been confirmed that season 2 will be released in 2024 on Netflix. Indeed, the famous streaming platform indicated the upcoming broadcast of the series in a letter addressed to its investors. A short extract was even recently revealed to increase the pressure.
The names of some new actors were revealed in a first trailer. We also find the universe, the music and the oppressive atmosphere which made the success of Netflix’s goose that lays the golden eggs. As Netflix announced, once again you should not get too attached to the characters, who will probably not last long.
✍️ What will be the storyline of season 2 of Squid Game?
We still know almost nothing about the second season of Squid Game, except thatit will start where the first one ended. Indeed, in the first teaser, we find Gin-hun at the airport. The latter, who dyed his hair red, received threats from the organizers of the game by telephone. Far from being afraid, the latter is determined to take revenge as he himself says: “I will find you, whatever it costs”.
If Netflix has not revealed more information regarding the continuation of events, the cliffhanger at the end of season 1 suggests several possibilities. The hero could return to service, by participating in a new edition of the Squid Games. Unless he decides to secretly infiltrate the hierarchy of the organization to go up to the leader. Either way, it won’t be long before we find out. Furthermore, season 1 did not lift the veil on all the mysteries surrounding the organization. We will probably learn more about the latter in future episodes of the series.
During a previous interview with CNN, the creator of the series explained that he wanted to highlight the dehumanization of people in debt and poor within society. The latter being forced to lower themselves to playing deadly recreational games. With this metaphor for society, the director wanted to show the inequalities between the different social classes in South Korea. For season 2, Hwang Dong-hyeok indicated in previous interviews that the main character could seek to put an end to these absurd games, and thus break this imbalance. Solidarity would notably be one of the main themes addressed in this new season.
🤔 What is the story of season 1?
For those who have not seen the first season, we advise you not to continue any further, in order to keep the surprise intact! Indeed, it is preferable to watch the episodes of this series which is clearly worth the detour, if you have Netflix of course. Otherwise, or if you just want to remember the events of Squid Game, we invite you to continue reading.

The Squid Game series takes place in Seoul and tells the story of Seong Gi-hun, a father, divorced, unemployed and in debt, who clearly has nothing going for him. While he is at the bottom of the abyss, he meets a strange salesman in the subway. The latter challenges him to Ddakji, a traditional Korean game. After having definitively buried poor Gi-hun’s dignity, the salesman leaves him a business card to participate in a game.
Seong Gi-hun tries his best by contacting the phone number on the back of the card. The latter then finds himself on a desert island after being kidnapped. He is not the only one, since 456 people in total are there. They all share one thing in common: poverty. These people then learn that they will have to participate in a major competition to try to win 45.6 billion won, or approximately 32 million euros. A particularly attractive reward for these people in a precarious situation. However, only one winner will take home the bet, and the eliminated players will perish, as they will learn to their cost.
The participants will have to overcome the Squid Game tests. In total, no less than 6 traditional games for children, including the famous squid game. If the principle of “every man for his own skin” is quickly assimilated by the players, they also sometimes have to rely on others for team games. The hero will then surround himself with Oh Il-nam, Abdul Ali, Kang Sae-byeok, as well as his childhood friend Sang-woo, who is also experiencing financial difficulties. As the games progress, the number of players decreases, as betrayals and strategies multiply.
At the same time, a police officer named Hwang Jun-ho investigates the disappearance of his brother. His leads eventually lead him to the island, where he discovers the scheme. It then infiltrates among the employees, who use different symbols depending on their place in the hierarchy (circle, triangle, and square). He then discovers the true purpose of these terrible games, organized each year to entertain a group of vicious billionaires: the VIPs. Jun-ho also finds his brother, who plays a key role in this organization, since he is the master of ceremonies, the one who hides behind the Front Man mask. A status that he acquired by winning the previous edition of the Squid Game.
It is ultimately the hero, Seong Gi-hun who wins the games, not without difficulty, after being confronted by his friend Sang-woo in the final event. Back in Seoul, the new billionaire once again comes across Oh Il-nam, an old man with whom he teamed up during the games, and who is supposed to be dead. He learns that his death was staged, and worse… that he is the creator of the Squid Games.
When he reveals the reason for these games, Seong Gi-hun decides against all odds to stay in Seoul. Indeed, and while he was preparing to take a plane which would have allowed him to rejoin his family and move on definitively, the main protagonist finally seems determined to take his revenge on the organizers of this deadly competition, where he lost his friends, and had to make horrible choices to survive. We can’t wait to find out what season 2 has in store for us.
👪 What casting for season 2 of Squid Game?
At the end of season 1, there are very few survivors left. In fact, Seong Gi-hun is the only character who officially escapes unscathed. Indeed, we learn at the very end of the series that Oh Il-nam is also alive. Furthermore, we will also find the policeman and his brother, who hides behind the mask of Front Man, as well as the group of billionaires, called the VIPs. The sales representative will also be present in the sequel, undoubtedly to recruit players for the next edition.
All other protagonists died during the games. Unless the creator of the series surprises us again by bringing certain presumed dead protagonists back to the screen.
In addition to the characters already confirmed by the director, the first trailer also revealed the identity of new actors, who will be among the next 456 participants in the Squid Games. ❓ Is a season 3 planned for Squid Game?
While season 2 has not yet been released, the director has already confided in an interview on the Korean channel KBS that he was discussing the continuation of the series with Netflix, and thata season 3 could see the light of day. This is not very surprising when we know that the Squid Game series was a hit as soon as it was launched on the streaming platform in 2021. Indeed, as its director recalled in a tweet, it took 12 years to bring the series to a close, and only 12 days for it to become the most popular Netflix series of all time.
Even if the story could have ended there, the director almost felt obliged to follow up his work, which broke records and generated more than 900 million dollars in turnover for the firm with the red N. Knowing that it cost “only” $21.4 million to produce, Netflix, which had already confirmed season 2 in 2022, made a very profitable investment. If the numbers are there again for the future, season 3 will then be obvious.
To ride the phenomenon and while waiting for the sequel, Netflix launched a spin-off show in 2023, Squid Game: The Challenge, which in turn met with great success. It is a reality show where 456 players compete to try to win $4.56 million. Fortunately, the consequences were less tragic for the losers, who obviously left unharmed.
