Do you use Google Maps to get around? You will be surprised. Google Maps is changing its look with significant changes to several interfaces, including route search. Here’s everything you need to know about this new design.
For several years, the Google Maps interface remained unchanged. Apart from a few Plans-style design changes at the end of the year, today there is a breath of fresh air blowing through the application with major overhauls, particularly on route search.
Clearer, faster, more practical: Google Maps is updating
Tap a location and discover a new card with the close and share buttons at the top right. No need to lose sight of the map: a light transparent outline allows you to keep the surrounding context.
Another new feature: route search abandon full screen, now showing a strip of the map at the top. This “sheet” approach guarantees better readability. You can see the new features in the images below:
The most notable change concerns the route search. Entering addresses is now limited to a dedicated area at the top of the screen, leaving more room for what’s important.
The carousel of different modes of transport (car, public transport, etc.) migrates to the bottom of the screen, making it easier to access on mobile. A simple swipe up reveals the full map, allowing you to compare navigation options.
These redesigns make the application more pleasant to use and less visually cluttered. The update is currently being rolled out gradually on Android (version 11.113.x) and should arrive on iOS soon. Note that this is the version that brings 3D buildings to Android Auto.
