Nvidia vs. AMD: What do you think about the launch of GeForce RTX 4000 and Radeon RX 7000?

Avatar of Thomas Grimm

In the meantime, both Nvidia and AMD have launched the first graphics cards of the new generation with the GeForce RTX 4090 (test) and the GeForce RTX 4080 (test) or the Radeon RX 7900 XT(X). How are the new products received by the ComputerBase community? And have you perhaps already struck?

The exciting graphics card autumn 2022 is coming to an end

An exciting technology autumn full of long-awaited new hardware is coming to an end. AMD’s Ryzen 7000 processors (test) and Intel’s Raptor Lake CPUs (test) were certainly a highlight, but the new generation of graphics cards was the focus, especially for gamers. First, Nvidia followed the two-year-old GeForce 3000 series with two new graphics accelerators with Ada Lovelace GPUs, before AMD recently launched the first two graphics cards with RDNA 3 GPUs and thus the first chiplet design for graphics processors .

Nvidia confidently defends the performance crown

In terms of performance, the crown with the GeForce RTX 4090 is clearly with Nvidia this time – the graphics card is extremely fast, even without exploiting its TDP of 450 or depending on DLSS 3 (test). In the editors’ rasterizer test course, the top model is around 60 to 70 percent ahead of the strongest graphics cards of the previous generation. The GeForce RTX 4080, on the other hand, is only around 50 percent ahead of the GeForce RTX 3080, which puts its big sister around 35 percent ahead. In the ranking at the same place, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is currently the fastest AMD graphics card, with the lead over the Radeon RX 6900 XT being only around 43 percent. The Radeon RX 7900 XT, on the other hand, cannot set itself apart from a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.

Meanwhile, if ray tracing comes into play – and at least 40 percent of ComputerBase readers stated in one of the last Sunday questions that the ray tracing performance of a graphics card is an issue when buying a new graphics card – the picture shifts even further in favor of Nvidia. Not only that GeForce RTX 4000 can make up more percentage points compared to the previous generation; Radeon RX 7000 can no longer distinguish itself from the same when using the rays. However, the distance to the new Nvidia graphics cards is smaller in relation than it was when comparing the GeForce RTX 3000 and Radeon RX 6000.

And so the performance rating of the previous and new generation of graphics cards gives AMD an ambivalent picture. The Radeon RX 6900 XT XTXH is around 27 percent behind the Nvidia model when playing with ray tracing with comparable rasterizer performance to the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. With the Radeon RX 7900 XT it is less than 21 percent with comparable rasterizer performance to the GeForce RTX 4080. The loss of performance that accompanies the use of the rays has therefore decreased slightly with RDNA 3 – but overall the gap in performance widened: While AMD was previously only around 15 percent behind a GeForce RTX, at least in terms of rasterizer performance with its own top models 3090 Ti, the strongest Nvidia graphics card now beats the AMD flagship by over 30 percent.

AMD no longer offers the most efficient graphics cards

Without a doubt, the mere performance is not the only technical aspect that can be used to evaluate a graphics card or even an entire generation of graphics cards. For many players, the power consumption is particularly relevant, as one of the last Sunday questions in relation to the ComputerBase community showed. Accordingly, just under a quarter of the readers were willing to accept a graphics card TDP of more than 300 watts. Ultimately, the link between performance and consumption is efficiency – and this is where Nvidia takes the lead this time, after AMD had the most efficient gaming graphics cards on the market over the last generation.

This is particularly noticeable when using a 144 FPS limit: Then a GeForce RTX 4090 sometimes uses only half as much energy as a Radeon RX 7900 XTX. A Sunday question devoted to this topic showed that efficiency is something that readers care about. And because of these factors, among other things, but also because Nvidia has more powerful coolers, currently more efficient drivers and DLSS 3, in the test of the Radeon RX 7900 XT(X) on ComputerBase, the competing GeForce RTX 4080 ultimately emerged as the technically better graphics card.

However, AMD certainly knows how to make the product, which at first glance seems mercilessly inferior, palatable to interested parties: not only that the RDNA 3 graphics cards can score points compared to the GeForce RTX 4080 with a more lavish memory expansion and a smaller form factor, which is relevant for users with compact housings; the price is also lower. Because while the GeForce RTX 4090 FE costs around 1,859 euros according to the recommended retail price after the latest price reduction and the GeForce RTX 4080 FE costs 1,399 euros, the reference designs of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT cost “only” 1,149 euros and 1,049 euros respectively Euro.

The question of how the community evaluates the start of the two new graphics card generations is now all the more exciting – also for the editors. At the market launch of the GeForce RTX 4080, there was restrained demand – also from the community – with the high price in particular causing criticism. The GeForce RTX 4090, on the other hand, is less available at the RRP, the same applies to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which was only released this week. A survey at the market launch already showed that the smaller Radeon RX 7900 XT is less popular. So how does it look at the end of the year: have you bought a next-gen graphics card? And if so, which ones?

Those readers who have already bought the new generation are invited to report in the comments why they decided on a specific graphics card or even a specific reference or custom design. On the other hand, readers who have not purchased any of the four new graphics cards are asked in the next vote: Why didn’t you buy any of the new graphics cards? Is there a serious reason or do several facets play a role?

A valid point in the past was that tests of the new Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards should be awaited. And the argument is still valid: Although the editors had already tested the reference designs of the new AMD graphics accelerators, the custom designs are sometimes a long time coming – not only on ComputerBase, but also on the market. In the coming week, however, at least one comparison test with four custom designs of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX from Asus, PowerColor, Sapphire and XFX will appear.

How do you rate the market launch of the new graphics cards?

But back to the whole of next-gen graphics cards. The debut has been made by both Nvidia and AMD; the first models have not only been presented, they have also arrived on the market. In the remaining days until the end of the year, the status quo will not change in this regard, which means that the time is ripe for a first conclusion: What do you think of the new graphics cards? Were your expectations met or exceeded in terms of specifications, performance, power consumption, efficiency and prices? Or are you rather disappointed with the overall package that the GeForce RTX 4000 and Radeon RX 7000 have been delivering so far after the long wait for the new generation?

AMD or Nvidia – who has the more attractive offer this time?

Regardless of how satisfied you are with the overall situation in the GPU market at the moment, the next question is about your personal, preliminary winner in the next-gen graphics cards. Nvidia or AMD, which of the two manufacturers currently offers the more attractive offer with its new products? Who do you think is better positioned to look ahead to the new year?

A similar question in a concrete form was already found in the surveys for the market launch of the Radeon RX 7900 XT(X). It is asked again at this point: The editors want to know from you how you would personally decide if you had a budget of around 1,350 to 1,400 euros and no graphics card in the gaming PC – which manufacturer would you choose?

At that cost point, the cheapest custom designs of the GeForce RTX 4080 are currently listed in price comparison, for example in the form of the Manli GeForce RTX 4080 Gallardo with a spirit level or the Palit GeForce RTX 4080 GameRock. On the AMD side, for example, the Aorus Radeon RX 7900 XTX Elite is just under 1,350 euros* and an Asus TUF, Sapphire Pulse or even Sapphire Nitro should also be in the budget – if they should become available, because so far they are only in the An option within the framework of this theoretical question.

Which reference design do you prefer visually?

One aspect that often falls behind in all such comparisons is the external appearance of a graphics card. Always purchasing the model that best suits your taste is often not a viable option – either because the corresponding graphics card does not fit technically or is out of reach in terms of price. Specifications, costs and availability should not play a role in the next question for a change. The editors want to know from you whether you find the Founders Edition of the GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 more attractive or whether you prefer the look of one of AMD’s new reference designs.

While the two optically identical reference designs of the Nvidia graphics cards are almost unchanged from the appearance of the previous generation of graphics cards and in particular the GeForce RTX 3090 (Ti) Founders Edition, AMD is breaking new ground with the different reference designs of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT: The Graphics cards became larger and, above all, darker; the silver accents of the Radeon RX 6000 reference designs are omitted.

Barcelona offers 200,000 euros to the project that reduces the accident rate of motorcycles

Avatar of Thomas Grimm

Barcelona City Council has launched a challenge for companies, startups, universities and innovation centers to present urban solutions that have as objective reduce motorcycle-related accidents. The chosen projects, which will be applied in the city, are part of the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility initiative that promotes pilot tests to improve mobility.

Barcelona is one of the European cities with a greater presence of motorcycles and mopeds which represent 33% of the total census of vehicles, and motorcycle drivers account for 86% of the seriously injured, according to the balance of road accidents for the first half of 2022. With the aim of reducing accidents and increasing road safety in the city, these entities have launched this initiative to find and apply innovative solutions on the streets of the city, with the collaboration of the Tomorrow.Mobility show organized by Fira and the EIT Urban Mobility (European Union initiative).

The challenge, launched internationally, counts with an economic endowment of 200,000 euros, which will correspond to a maximum of 80% of the total amount of the winning solutions. The projects can be aimed at resolving the accident rate from behavioral innovation, that is, with solutions related to driving habits, and from technological innovation.

The execution time of the selected proposals is 18 months, of which the pilot phase must be a minimum of six. The proposals must be applicable in a real environment in the short term and must define, in this sense, its deployment space. In addition, it must achieve quantifiable results in relation to the safety of motorcyclists and third parties, which are lasting over time. Its innovative and differential component will also be valued both in the methodologies and resources used and in its execution.

This call is aimed at companies, startups, universities, research centers, technology centers, associations and foundations that have until next March 1 to present their projects. A committee of experts will assess the technical quality of the works presented and will choose the winning solutions that could be applied in Barcelona during that same year. The projects will have international projection with their participation in the next edition of Tomorrow.Mobility, which will be held next November together with the Smart City Expo World Congress at Fira de Barcelona.

Microsoft Teams integrates into Elgato Stream Deck

Avatar of Thomas Grimm

Elgato Stream Deck

The Elgato Stream Deck is a very interesting peripheral that we had the opportunity to analyze at the time, and that allows you to create different shortcuts and functions that will be associated to each of the available buttons. It allows you to create different usage profiles, and we can switch between them in a very simple way.

For example, we can assign to a button that directly opens a web page, to run a specific application, to perform a specific action and we can also set specific commands and download completely free applications. It is a very interesting solution, especially for professionals who are dedicated to content creation and streaming.

The point is that the Redmond giant has released an official plugin that allows you to integrate an Elgato Stream Deck device with Microsoft Teams. This plugin was announced by the American company earlier this week, but it was officially launched yesterday. The installation process is quite simple, but we can find more information in the official Microsoft forums.

Once installed, we can use the Elgato Stream Deck to access shortcuts and specific functions that will improve our user experience with Microsoft Teams. Thus, for example, we can blur the background in a video call by pressing a button, and we can also assign other specific functions such as raising and lowering our hand, muting ourselves, recording, and even to show live reactions during meetings.

This new plugin enhances the value of the Elgato Stream Deck, making it a very interesting solution for those who work remotely and have to participate in frequent video calls and events. Obviously it is still an excellent option for content creators and streaming professionals as well. I remind you that it is available in different versions, and that the standard MK.2 model with 15 buttons is priced at €149.99.
