It was back in 2020 when Disney brought one of the most striking functions of its platform to Spain. With the name “GroupWatch” it made it possible, in the middle of the pandemic, share with friends virtually what we were watching.
But time has passed and either because the confinement is history or because of the changes that the streaming platforms are proposing in their formulas (also Disney+ itself), modifications are also coming and “GroupWatch” has been affected.
This is how GroupWatch worked
In fact, “GroupWatch” no longer appears if you go to Disney+ content. And it’s a shame because the premise of this feature was interesting: creating a virtual meetup that It worked on the entire Disney+ catalog either in apps and web.
All you have to do is choose a movie, series or documentary, click on the “GroupWatch” button (the icon with three people) and The link is sent to the rest of the users so that they can join in a kind of virtual movie theater.
“GroupWatch” had some limits, it’s true. It could be used only with users who They were Disney+ subscribers, who resided in our country and the limit was 7 people (counting us).
In this way, what was achieved with this link and with “GroupWatch” is that the reproduction was simultaneous on the devices of all users so that there was no lag and in this way Viewers could react in real time with emojis, take a group bathroom break, rewind to watch a scene, or fast forward.
But as we say, this is history. The “GroupWatch” feature has completely disappeared from Disney+. You can enter any movie, series or documentary, but you will no longer find the icon to activate this function. In fact, Disney has removed any mention of the feature and the official “GroupWatch” page now simply redirects to the main Disney+ page.
For now Disney has not issued an official statement on the matter.. The colleagues at whatsondisneyplus contacted support and this was the response. We have asked too and we wait for the answer.
For now, we have confirmed that the GroupWatch feature has been removed as a feature in all regions for Disney+. There hasn’t been any report on when it will be back on Disney+, as the GroupWatch feature was removed today.
The truth is that Disney+, beyond its specific offers, has already announced that it will increase rates starting in November, causing a significant increase in the price to pay if you want to continue using the platform. Currently the price to watch Disney+ with the single plan costs 8.99 euros. But from November it will become the Premium plan with a price of 11.99 euros per month to have access to the same benefits. Continuing to pay 8.99 euros will mean staying on the Standard plan with ads for 5.99 euros per month.
