The notebooks IdeaPad Pro 5 and 5i as well as the IdeaPad Slim 5 and 5i, which are in the consumer segment, will receive several upgrades from Lenovo before CES 2023. The consumer devices now also offer 16:10 and partly OLED, AMD Ryzen 7000 and Intel Raptor Lake are also new. The graphics cards are RTX 4000.

The new IdeaPad Pro are the first notebooks from Lenovo to use the AMD Ryzen 7000 for the mobile sector. Lenovo names the first CPU models from the U and HS series, but details on the CPUs are only expected at the AMD keynote at CES 2023 in Las Vegas in early January. The same applies to the RTX 4000 laptop GPUs that are sometimes offered, for which nothing is known except for the names. Depending on the model, Lenovo will rely on the GeForce RTX 4050. When it comes to notebook graphics cards, it should also be noted that, despite the new name, they could theoretically still use amps alongside Ada Lovelace. Nvidia wants to announce the details of the mobile solutions on January 3rd from 5 p.m. German time.

IdeaPad Pro 5 Gen 8 in 14″ and 16″

In relation to the actual notebooks, the IdeaPad Pro 5 Gen 8 in 14″ and 16″ makes the start, which should reach German retailers from May next year at prices starting at 1,099 euros. In addition to the new CPUs and GPUs, the devices are characterized by displays in 16:10 format, which have now also arrived in this class. A wide variety of IPS panels with 1400p, 1600p and 1800p resolution at 60 Hz and sometimes also 120 Hz are available. All details can be found in the tables for each new product.

USB-C 4.0 and HDMI 2.1

The RAM ranges from 16 GB to 32 GB LPDDR5 or LPDDR5X, the SSDs from 512 GB to 1 TB. The connections are identical with USB-C 4.0 and HDMI 2.1, among other things, and there is also an SD card reader for both variants. Options also exist for wireless connectivity with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Lenovo offers the notebooks with Windows 11 in the colors arctic gray and frost blue.

Same notebooks with Intel Raptor Lake

The same notebooks with only Intel processors run under the name IdeaPad Pro 5i Gen 8. The “i” stands for Intel and two available H processors from the Raptor Lake series. The displays are also 14″ or 16″ in this variant and display their pixels on an IPS panel in 16:10 format. The GPUs are the same as the AMD variant, although the smaller model can be equipped with a discrete GPU .

Intel starts earlier and more expensive

Anyone who grabs the IdeaPad Pro 5i can get their hands on the notebook a month earlier than the AMD version in April 2023, but with prices starting at 1,199 euros they have to pay 100 euros more compared to the AMD version.

IdeaPad Slim 5 for the first time with OLED

Smaller and lighter are the IdeaPad Slim 5 and IdeaPad Slim 5i, whose names again stand for the two AMD and Intel versions. With these notebooks, Lenovo is bringing the OLED option known from more expensive devices to the consumer segment for the first time. Offered alongside multiple 1200p IPS models or 1400p variants, the 1200p 60Hz OLED screen achieves 100 percent DCI-P3.

Ryzen 7000 also with Zen 3 Plus cores

The smaller chassis only accommodates AMD Ryzen 7000U, whereby, as with the HS models, it should be noted that the third digit in the model designation for Zen 3(+) is a “3” or the newer Zen 4 cores are a “3”. “4” stands, as has been officially known since the announcement of the Ryzen 7000. The U models are in the 15 to 28 watt class, the HS variants in the 35 watt class. While the IdeaPad Pro 5 Gen 8 also has newer Zen 4 cores, the IdeaPad Slim 5 still relies entirely on Zen 3(+) for the Ryzen 7000U. Unlike the IdeaPad Pro 5(i), Lenovo does not offer discrete graphics cards from AMD or Nvidia in this class.

The IdeaPad Slim 5 should start in May 2023 in 14″ and 16″ from 799 euros each.

Intel version with lots of CPU choices

An Intel variant is planned again from April 2023 under the name IdeaPad Slim 5i, but the price is again 100 euros higher at 899 euros. The CPU selection of these 14″ and 16″ models is gigantic and ranges from the small Core i5-1334U to various Raptor Lake P models and an older Core i5-12450H to the Core i7-13700H. With RAM and SSD, the same configuration as the AMD counterpart can be selected with up to 16 GB or 1 TB.

ComputerBase received information about this item from Lenovo under NDA. The only requirement was the earliest possible publication date.

Barcelona City Council has launched a challenge for companies, startups, universities and innovation centers to present urban solutions that have as objective reduce motorcycle-related accidents. The chosen projects, which will be applied in the city, are part of the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility initiative that promotes pilot tests to improve mobility.

Barcelona is one of the European cities with a greater presence of motorcycles and mopeds which represent 33% of the total census of vehicles, and motorcycle drivers account for 86% of the seriously injured, according to the balance of road accidents for the first half of 2022. With the aim of reducing accidents and increasing road safety in the city, these entities have launched this initiative to find and apply innovative solutions on the streets of the city, with the collaboration of the Tomorrow.Mobility show organized by Fira and the EIT Urban Mobility (European Union initiative).

The challenge, launched internationally, counts with an economic endowment of 200,000 euros, which will correspond to a maximum of 80% of the total amount of the winning solutions. The projects can be aimed at resolving the accident rate from behavioral innovation, that is, with solutions related to driving habits, and from technological innovation.

The execution time of the selected proposals is 18 months, of which the pilot phase must be a minimum of six. The proposals must be applicable in a real environment in the short term and must define, in this sense, its deployment space. In addition, it must achieve quantifiable results in relation to the safety of motorcyclists and third parties, which are lasting over time. Its innovative and differential component will also be valued both in the methodologies and resources used and in its execution.

This call is aimed at companies, startups, universities, research centers, technology centers, associations and foundations that have until next March 1 to present their projects. A committee of experts will assess the technical quality of the works presented and will choose the winning solutions that could be applied in Barcelona during that same year. The projects will have international projection with their participation in the next edition of Tomorrow.Mobility, which will be held next November together with the Smart City Expo World Congress at Fira de Barcelona.

Microsoft Teams integrates into Elgato Stream Deck

Elgato Stream Deck

The Elgato Stream Deck is a very interesting peripheral that we had the opportunity to analyze at the time, and that allows you to create different shortcuts and functions that will be associated to each of the available buttons. It allows you to create different usage profiles, and we can switch between them in a very simple way.

For example, we can assign to a button that directly opens a web page, to run a specific application, to perform a specific action and we can also set specific commands and download completely free applications. It is a very interesting solution, especially for professionals who are dedicated to content creation and streaming.

The point is that the Redmond giant has released an official plugin that allows you to integrate an Elgato Stream Deck device with Microsoft Teams. This plugin was announced by the American company earlier this week, but it was officially launched yesterday. The installation process is quite simple, but we can find more information in the official Microsoft forums.

Once installed, we can use the Elgato Stream Deck to access shortcuts and specific functions that will improve our user experience with Microsoft Teams. Thus, for example, we can blur the background in a video call by pressing a button, and we can also assign other specific functions such as raising and lowering our hand, muting ourselves, recording, and even to show live reactions during meetings.

This new plugin enhances the value of the Elgato Stream Deck, making it a very interesting solution for those who work remotely and have to participate in frequent video calls and events. Obviously it is still an excellent option for content creators and streaming professionals as well. I remind you that it is available in different versions, and that the standard MK.2 model with 15 buttons is priced at €149.99.
