Movistar is already distributing its new Smart WiFi 6 router. If you request it, we have already seen how you must be attentive to return old equipment and thus avoid possible fines. A router that improves the features of the HGU that we already know and that, despite having almost the same options, includes a novelty.

It is about the possibility of take advantage of the Band Steering function or what is the same, a kind of intelligent WiFi. Something similar to what we already saw in the route with WiFi 6 from Orange/Jazztel and that now reaches Movistar, since it was not available before in the HGU that they marketed. An option that you can activate or deactivate to your liking by following these steps.

Band Steering yes or no… you choose

In its day we already fully explained what Band Steering consists of. To summarize, it is a technology integrated into routers and wireless access devices that seeks to achieve a clear effect: always connect to the best available band at all times. And this does it to facilitate switching automatically and without user intervention between the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands depending on the one that offers the best performance at all times.

Personally, I haven’t activated it on the Jazztel router my parents use. I like to decide personally at all times, the network to which I connect each device, but it may be interesting depending on which users or for certain uses. That’s why we are going to explain how to enable or disable network unification Wi-Fi 2.4 and 5 GHz in the new Movistar router.

This is how you can improve coverage at home with the intelligent Wi-Fi of your Orange and Jazztel router

It is normal for home automation (IoT) devices to connect to the 2.4 GHz network and some users may want to avoid confusion with the 5 GHz network. Although both are differentiated by name, Band Steering eliminates this problem by assigning, thanks to an algorithm, the network that it considers most suitable for each device.

Default, Band Steering is activated in the new Movistar Smart WiFi 6 router, but if you want to disable it it is very easy. To do it, you just have to access the router interface in the way we already know, this is entering the address https://192.168.1.1 in the navigation bar and then typing our access password.

Once inside we must look at the bar on the left and select the section “Network Settings” and among all the options search and enter “Wireless 5GHz” and go to tab “Advanced”.

We will see different options on the screen and there we must look at the one that appears with the name “Unique SSID”. On the right there is a box with two options, from which we must choose disabled and then confirm by clicking on the “Apply” button.

The router will take the appropriate steps, we will be left without a network. Instead, we will see how the two available networks appear separatelyboth the 2.4 GHz and the 5GHz and we will be in charge of choosing one or the other.
