One year ago we informed you of the arrival in Google Chrome (and compatible browsers) of the new ‘Manifest V3’ extensions, referring to the new format of the ‘manifest’ file that comes bundled with each browser extension. Originally, Google’s plan was for the old Manifest V2 extensions to coexist for a year with the new format, before discontinuing support as of January 2023.

But you will remember that a change in the calendar was announced last September: in January the tests would begin to implement the ‘disconnection’ of the old extensions only in the development versions of Chrome (Beta, Dev and Canary), and users from the stable version (most of them, in short) they would have until January 2024 to say goodbye to their old extensions.

At the time, the intention to ‘give developers more time’ was cited as the reason for the schedule change, since several APIs seemed not to be mature enough.

Well, just 3 months later, this calendar has once again blown up: just half a month before the start of the transition tests to Manifest V3, Google that the process is postponed again. According to Simeon Vincent, responsible for relations between the Chrome development team and extension creators, the decision is the result of comments received from the latter, which they feel that they are not having enough support to overcome some problems transition to the new format. What’s behind Manifest V3?

In any case, with this issue there is much more at stake than a mere format update. Officially, the reason for the transition to MV3 is that the proposed new extension format is much more secure and has less impact on browser performance. However, Google has taken advantage of the change to restrict extensions’ access to certain features without which ad blockers cannot function and other privacy related extensions.

Google has maintained that the new system contemplates the most common use cases (after, yes, several concessions and readjustments), but the creators of extensions such as uBlock Origin and Ghostery have harshly charged against MV3, as has done the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The AdGuard extension launched an experimental version based on MV3 that agreed with both parties: Google, which maintains that content blockers continue to work with the new formatand the developers, who point out that the functionality of the new AdGuard has been severely limited.

For its part, Mozilla has announced that it does not plan to follow Google’s path with its own extensions, and the developers of Brave (a browser based on Chrome) have made clear their intention to patch the code to continue to support ad blockers in your browser.

An AI that allows anyone, and in a matter of seconds, to clone the voice of any other person (or, of course, oneself) is beginning to take the Internet by storm. The controversial but popular 4chan forum, without going any further, has been flooded with Audio deepfakes of celebrities like Emma Watson or Joe Rogan filled with violent or pornographic comments.

And all since, this past weekend, access was opened publicly to the ElevenLabs platform, perhaps one of the most significant examples of how far AI-based Technologys dedicated to audio cloning and synthesis have advanced.

Apart from the undeniable realism of its voice synthesis (light years away from canned voices like Loquendo, so popular years ago), the company itself boasts that the audio clips it generates require little or no editingwhich encourages its use in tasks such as dubbing or audiobook production:

Of course, the fact that it does not present none of the safeguards we are used to finding in imaging services to avoid creating certain types of content ‘sensitive’ and/or based on real people.

In a thread posted on Twitter last Monday, ElevenLabs recognized that some of its users were abusing its application: “[observamos] a growing number of cases of misuse of voice cloning”, and warned that they are able to “trace any generated audio back to the user”.

Likewise, it has put on the table the possibility of implementing protections such as the User identity verification or manual approval of each request voice cloning. However, its use remains unlimited for now.

When we register for free on the platform, we are granted access to a series of tools. First of all, we will find the simple voice synthesizer that allows us to convert texts to sound files using, in principle, predefined voices in American English.

But the problem that resides is the great differences that can exist between the English and Spanish-speaking communities, mainly due to the differences in investment by advertisers.

But the great reality is that despite this difference in investment and prestige, the truth is that the Spanish-speaking community is one of the most powerful in terms of growth in the number of viewers and also in number of creators.
