According to research conducted by MIT professor Dr.Stuart Madnick, 2.6 billion records have been compromised in the last two years due to data breaches. This study was commissioned by Apple and demonstrates, once again, how exposed our personal data is on the internet.
If you want to ensure that your files and data are not exposed on the internet, our recommendation is that you use iCloud and also take into account the following settings that we present below. Thanks to this you will have total control and maximum security over your data in iCloud, more than Google Drive or Dropbox.
Maximum security is in iCloud
With the release of iOS 17.2 and macOS Sonoma, Apple has introduced the Advanced Protection for iCloud, a clear and forceful answer for all those who at some point have doubted the security of Apple services. This new mechanism uses the End-to-end encryption to provide the highest level of security for data stored in iCloud till the date. Below we present everything you need to know to activate it on your Apple devices.
This new security mechanism now further ensures that we users have full control over the security of our data on iCloud. In addition, this includes elements such as iCloud backups, photos, notes and more information that we have stored in other applications and synchronized with iCloud.
Important steps before activating advanced data protection
Before enabling the Advanced Data Protection, It is important to set up Account Recovery. In case you forget your password this ensures that you can recover it at any time.
- Go to the settings on your iPhone or iPad or to System Settings on the Mac and select your Apple ID at the top of the menu.
- Choose iCloud.
- Select the option of Advanced Data Protection.
- Select the option of Account Recovery and Follow the on-screen instructions to configure this option.
During the setup of Account Recovery, you will see that it allows you to choose a recovery contact, this recovery contact can be a trusted individual who also has an Apple device. The contact in question will receive recovery codes in case you forget your password, so make sure it’s someone you trust. In addition to this option, it is also possible to reset the account with a 28-character recovery key, which you should write down and save in a safe place.
How to activate Advanced Data Protection on your Apple devices?
Once account recovery has been configured for possible cases of forgotten password, it is time to enable the Advanced Data Protection for the iCloud backups. Before activating Advanced Data Protection, it is necessary to update all devices to the latest software versions. Those that do not support end-to-end encryption will need to be removed from the account.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to the Settings on iPhone or iPad, System Settings on Mac and select your Apple ID at the top of the menu.
- Choose iCloud.
- Choose Advanced Data Protection.
- Activate the function Advanced Data Protection.
When Advanced Data Protection is activated, Data access through iCloud.com is disabled by default. Although users will still have the option to temporarily enable access to iCloud.com, Apple warns that this allows web browsers and Apple itself to have limited access to specific data encryption keys.
