In its annual balance sheet for the 5G and fiber optic network expansion, Deutsche Telekom draws a positive conclusion. Deutsche Telekom is now also fulfilling a sub-aspect of the 2019 coverage requirements of the Federal Network Agency in the mobile communications sector. The largest consumer in the mobile network this year was no longer YouTube, but Instagram.

The 2019 coverage requirements of the Federal Network Agency stipulate that by the end of 2022 the providers will supply 98 percent of households in each federal state, all federal motorways, the most important federal roads and the railways with at least 100 Mbit/s via LTE. According to the annual balance sheet, Telekom covers 99 percent of all households with 4G and achieves the required LTE coverage of at least 98 percent of the population in all federal states with at least 100 Mbit/s. “Deutsche Telekom thus meets the target of the requirements from the 2019 frequency auction‘ says the balance sheet. Strictly speaking, as with Vodafone and Telefónica/O2, it is a sub-aspect of several goals.

The fact that all motorways, the most important federal roads and rail routes are supplied with at least 100 Mbit/s via LTE is not the case for any of the three providers, according to the current knowledge of the editors. Otherwise, these successes would probably have been communicated via the press offices as well. On Monday, ComputerBase asked the network operators for current figures for other aspects of the supply requirements, but did not receive an answer from any provider.

Federal Network Agency checks after the deadline

The editors of the Federal Network Agency wanted to know what the consequences could be if the coverage requirements were not met. As a spokesman explained, the coverage requirements must be met by December 31, 2022, and a final assessment will be made after the deadline. Thereafter, depending on the circumstances, fines and/or penalty payments could potentially be imposed. “If, after the deadline for fulfilling the coverage requirement has expired, the Federal Network Agency has determined that the requirements have not been met or have not been fully met on time, the Federal Network Agency will examine, taking into account the reasons for the delay, whether legal measures such as fines and/or penalty payments will be imposed“, says the statement.

Instagram overtakes YouTube in data usage

In the annual balance sheet, Telekom also addresses the “data boom” in mobile and fixed networks. 2.427 billion gigabytes and thus 30 percent more than in 2021 went through the mobile network. The largest consumer this year was Instagram at 612 TB per day ahead of YouTube at 544 TB per day. Google’s video platform was still leading the field last year. Facebook follows in third place with 326 TB per day. The biggest jumps were recorded on Instagram and TikTok, which recorded around two and a half times as much data volume as in 2021. For the fixed network, an unspecified increase of 20 percent compared to 2021 is mentioned.

FTTH expansion by 2 million households

In the fixed network, the provider now has 5.2 million FTTH connections and has thus met its own target for expansion with 2 million additional connections for this year. By 2024, Telekom wants to connect more than ten million households with fiber optics. The fiber optic network currently consists of around 690,000 km in Germany, and 18,000 new fiber optic network distributors were added this year.

5G aimed for 99 percent of the population

In the mobile network, the focus is on 5G, which is available to 94 percent of the people in Germany. By 2025, Telekom wants to cover 99 percent of the population with 5G. Along the transport routes, the quality and performance should also continue to increase. In 2022, Telekom built a new mobile communications site every two and a half days, both on the ICE routes and on the motorways. The report on the Network Day 2022 provides further information on the challenges of the expansion, especially along the rails.

Barcelona City Council has launched a challenge for companies, startups, universities and innovation centers to present urban solutions that have as objective reduce motorcycle-related accidents. The chosen projects, which will be applied in the city, are part of the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility initiative that promotes pilot tests to improve mobility.

Barcelona is one of the European cities with a greater presence of motorcycles and mopeds which represent 33% of the total census of vehicles, and motorcycle drivers account for 86% of the seriously injured, according to the balance of road accidents for the first half of 2022. With the aim of reducing accidents and increasing road safety in the city, these entities have launched this initiative to find and apply innovative solutions on the streets of the city, with the collaboration of the Tomorrow.Mobility show organized by Fira and the EIT Urban Mobility (European Union initiative).

The challenge, launched internationally, counts with an economic endowment of 200,000 euros, which will correspond to a maximum of 80% of the total amount of the winning solutions. The projects can be aimed at resolving the accident rate from behavioral innovation, that is, with solutions related to driving habits, and from technological innovation.

The execution time of the selected proposals is 18 months, of which the pilot phase must be a minimum of six. The proposals must be applicable in a real environment in the short term and must define, in this sense, its deployment space. In addition, it must achieve quantifiable results in relation to the safety of motorcyclists and third parties, which are lasting over time. Its innovative and differential component will also be valued both in the methodologies and resources used and in its execution.

This call is aimed at companies, startups, universities, research centers, technology centers, associations and foundations that have until next March 1 to present their projects. A committee of experts will assess the technical quality of the works presented and will choose the winning solutions that could be applied in Barcelona during that same year. The projects will have international projection with their participation in the next edition of Tomorrow.Mobility, which will be held next November together with the Smart City Expo World Congress at Fira de Barcelona.

Microsoft Teams integrates into Elgato Stream Deck

Elgato Stream Deck

The Elgato Stream Deck is a very interesting peripheral that we had the opportunity to analyze at the time, and that allows you to create different shortcuts and functions that will be associated to each of the available buttons. It allows you to create different usage profiles, and we can switch between them in a very simple way.

For example, we can assign to a button that directly opens a web page, to run a specific application, to perform a specific action and we can also set specific commands and download completely free applications. It is a very interesting solution, especially for professionals who are dedicated to content creation and streaming.

The point is that the Redmond giant has released an official plugin that allows you to integrate an Elgato Stream Deck device with Microsoft Teams. This plugin was announced by the American company earlier this week, but it was officially launched yesterday. The installation process is quite simple, but we can find more information in the official Microsoft forums.

Once installed, we can use the Elgato Stream Deck to access shortcuts and specific functions that will improve our user experience with Microsoft Teams. Thus, for example, we can blur the background in a video call by pressing a button, and we can also assign other specific functions such as raising and lowering our hand, muting ourselves, recording, and even to show live reactions during meetings.

This new plugin enhances the value of the Elgato Stream Deck, making it a very interesting solution for those who work remotely and have to participate in frequent video calls and events. Obviously it is still an excellent option for content creators and streaming professionals as well. I remind you that it is available in different versions, and that the standard MK.2 model with 15 buttons is priced at €149.99.
