13th Gen Intel Core: The Core i5 are the heroes of the new 65-watt family

Even if Intel focuses on the Core i9-13900, the real heroes of the 13th Core generation are the new Core i5. For the first time, these processors now also offer efficiency cores and thus significantly more multi-thread performance in the 65-watt class. But Raptor Lake is only at the top.

Even a Core i5-13500 gets 8 E-Cores

Many new Core i5s are now following the i5 flagship Core i5-13600K and promise high performance at a relatively low price. They all benefit from the introduction of the E-Cores in the segment as well as additional clocks, according to Intel they can offer up to 39 percent more performance in multi-core scenarios than previous Core i5s in the 65-watt class.

With eight additional e-cores each in the Core i5-13600 and Core i5-13500 instead of none in the predecessors, the multi-core performance increases significantly. Ideally, the increase in performance should be even greater, after all, a Core i5-13500 offers 67 percent more threads (20 instead of 12) than its older counterpart.

The Core i5-13400 still has four E-Cores for four more threads. The Core i3-13100, on the other hand, has to do without any efficiency cores, which is almost a copy of the Core i3-12100.

At the top, the Core i9-13900 now offers twice as many E-Cores at 16; The Core i7-13700 has four more than its predecessor.

Core i5 is the unsung hero

It’s been the same game for years, but the news still hasn’t made it to every corner of Intel. Of course, the media focus on the fastest and largest product is important, but a Core i5 does not take customers away from a Core i9, after all it costs 400 euros to 500 euros less, so it is literally not even on the same playing field.

In this new generation, however, the Core i5 makes such a leap that it more than deserves the media echo, which is exactly why ComputerBase called the Core i5-13600K the highlight of the series in the test of the first three models.

However, Intel did not provide test samples of the Core i5 without K, even after repeated requests and despite availability. In the preliminary presentation, Intel itself identified the Core i5 as “unsung hero” designated. However, marketing obviously considers the Core i9 to be more important.

More turbo and sometimes less base clock

Across the board, the newcomers deliver a higher maximum turbo clock than their predecessors. The difference of 500 MHz in the Core i9-13900 compared to the Core i9-12900 is particularly large, which makes up to 5.6 GHz possible. The other models have a plus from 200 MHz to 400 MHz.

In return, the base clock also drops significantly in some cases, when the cores have been increased a lot. The i9-13900’s base clock is 400 MHz below its predecessor. With the Core i5-13500 and Core i5-13600 it is even 500 MHz and 600 MHz respectively. With the same production, this is a tribute to not breaking the TDP range of 65 watts.

Raptor Lake is not included in everything

As already suspected, not all representatives of Intel’s 13th core generation are based on the new Raptor Lake architecture. In the new 65-watt class, new versions of the Alder Lake architecture are even in the majority. Intel doesn’t write that explicitly, but it can be easily seen from the size of the L2 cache.

At Alder Lake, each P-core has 1.25 MB and each E-core cluster, each with 4 cores, has 2 MB of L2 cache. On Raptor Lake, this has been generously increased to 2MB per P-Core and 4MB per E-Core cluster. With the Core i9-13900 and Core i7-13700, this calculation works and Raptor Lake is behind it. The Core i5-13600, Core i5-13500, Core i5-13400 and Core i3-13100 don’t add up and the L2 cache sizes correspond to the Alder Lake scheme. For example, the Core i5-13500 offers a total of 11.5 MB of L2 cache: 6 × 1.25 MB for the P cores and 2 × 2 MB for the E cores. With Raptor Lake, on the other hand, 6 × 2 MB and 2 × 4 MB would have come together for a total of 20 MB of L2 cache.

With “F” and “T” there are 16 variants

As usual, the mainstream models described above are also available as variants without an integrated GPU, which are marked with the suffix “F”. The exceptions are the Core i5-13600 and Core i5-13400, both of which are not available as an F version and are therefore only available with an iGPU.

Except for the missing graphics unit, there is no difference. Only the Core i3-13100F has a marginally lower TDP rating of 58 watts instead of 60 watts. The differences in price are greater, because according to Intel’s list prices, up to 25 US dollars can be saved with the F model.

If a TDP of 65 watts is already too much, you will find offshoots with only 35 watts trimmed for frugality in the T-models, as usual. Although these offer the same basic configuration of cores, cache and GPU as the mainstream guard, the clock rates are drastically reduced. This does not apply to the prices, however, as they are on the level of the respective 65-watt counterparts with a GPU.

Intel’s performance predictions

Although the Core i5 dared to take the biggest step with the introduction of the E cores in this class, Intel’s performance preview again only focuses on the Core i9. In “Productivity Benchmarks” this should increase by about 10 percent compared to the Core i9-12900. In selected games it is 6 percent to 19 percent and in the area of content creation only 3 percent to 10 percent.

Corresponding to 33 percent more threads, the multi-thread performance increases by 34 percent according to Intel. With an unchanged 65 watts, the efficiency increases.

For LGA1700 with DDR4 or DDR5

Like the K models, the remaining Core i-13000 will be installed in the LGA 1700 socket of the current platform with 700 chipsets as well as the predecessors with 600 chipsets. Depending on the mainboard, DDR4 or DDR5 memory can be used. With the B760 mainboards introduced in parallel, there is now more choice for the new middle class.

ComputerBase has received the information about this content from Intel in advance under the NDA. The only requirement was the earliest possible publication date. The manufacturer did not influence the test report and there was no obligation to publish it.

Barcelona offers 200,000 euros to the project that reduces the accident rate of motorcycles

Barcelona City Council has launched a challenge for companies, startups, universities and innovation centers to present urban solutions that have as objective reduce motorcycle-related accidents. The chosen projects, which will be applied in the city, are part of the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility initiative that promotes pilot tests to improve mobility.

Barcelona is one of the European cities with a greater presence of motorcycles and mopeds which represent 33% of the total census of vehicles, and motorcycle drivers account for 86% of the seriously injured, according to the balance of road accidents for the first half of 2022. With the aim of reducing accidents and increasing road safety in the city, these entities have launched this initiative to find and apply innovative solutions on the streets of the city, with the collaboration of the Tomorrow.Mobility show organized by Fira and the EIT Urban Mobility (European Union initiative).

The challenge, launched internationally, counts with an economic endowment of 200,000 euros, which will correspond to a maximum of 80% of the total amount of the winning solutions. The projects can be aimed at resolving the accident rate from behavioral innovation, that is, with solutions related to driving habits, and from technological innovation.

The execution time of the selected proposals is 18 months, of which the pilot phase must be a minimum of six. The proposals must be applicable in a real environment in the short term and must define, in this sense, its deployment space. In addition, it must achieve quantifiable results in relation to the safety of motorcyclists and third parties, which are lasting over time. Its innovative and differential component will also be valued both in the methodologies and resources used and in its execution.

This call is aimed at companies, startups, universities, research centers, technology centers, associations and foundations that have until next March 1 to present their projects. A committee of experts will assess the technical quality of the works presented and will choose the winning solutions that could be applied in Barcelona during that same year. The projects will have international projection with their participation in the next edition of Tomorrow.Mobility, which will be held next November together with the Smart City Expo World Congress at Fira de Barcelona.

Microsoft Teams integrates into Elgato Stream Deck

The Elgato Stream Deck is a very interesting peripheral that we had the opportunity to analyze at the time, and that allows you to create different shortcuts and functions that will be associated to each of the available buttons. It allows you to create different usage profiles, and we can switch between them in a very simple way.

For example, we can assign to a button that directly opens a web page, to run a specific application, to perform a specific action and we can also set specific commands and download completely free applications. It is a very interesting solution, especially for professionals who are dedicated to content creation and streaming.

The point is that the Redmond giant has released an official plugin that allows you to integrate an Elgato Stream Deck device with Microsoft Teams. This plugin was announced by the American company earlier this week, but it was officially launched yesterday. The installation process is quite simple, but we can find more information in the official Microsoft forums.

Once installed, we can use the Elgato Stream Deck to access shortcuts and specific functions that will improve our user experience with Microsoft Teams. Thus, for example, we can blur the background in a video call by pressing a button, and we can also assign other specific functions such as raising and lowering our hand, muting ourselves, recording, and even to show live reactions during meetings.

This new plugin enhances the value of the Elgato Stream Deck, making it a very interesting solution for those who work remotely and have to participate in frequent video calls and events. Obviously it is still an excellent option for content creators and streaming professionals as well. I remind you that it is available in different versions, and that the standard MK.2 model with 15 buttons is priced at €149.99.
