10 things you can do when you launch your Smart TV with Android TV, Tizen and webOS

Today a Smart TV is more than watching television, that is clear to us. And it is that with the technological evolution, both in image quality and in functionalities, They have become the central axis of our living room and in a device in which to be able to do everything.

With all the possibilities that a Smart TV currently houses, in this article we wanted to compile some of the most outstanding aspects that we can do when it comes to launch our smart TV, be it Android TV, LG or Samsung. Especially on these very important dates in which a new television can give the touch that your living room needed.

Set the picture and sound quality of your TV

Perhaps one of the first fundamental steps of everyone who launches a television. And it is that today, Smart TVs have increasingly better panel Technologys and advances in sound, so a correct configuration according to our preferences can greatly improve our experience during content playback.

At Xataka Smart Home we have made numerous guides on how to correctly calibrate your television, the use of patterns, and multiple image modes to fine-tune your Smart TV in the best possible way.

We recommend being skeptical of image interpolation modes (the famous soap opera effect), and power-saving measures (in case you want the best image quality), since may impair the maximum performance of your TVamong other options.

Always have a good file manager on hand

As in the case of mobile devices and tablets, using a file manager can always come in handy, especially if you usually have multiple files locally or download applications on your television. Thus, We can see all the files that we have installed on the TVbeing able to access all its internal folders.

On Android TV you have a wide range of file managers, although perhaps one of the most prominent is X-Plore File Manager, which also has a split view that will come in handy for copying and moving files from one path to another .

Unfortunately, if you have purchased an LG or Samsung TV, you are going to fall quite short in this aspectsince none of the systems have an alternative way to manage the local storage of the device, beyond the uninstallation of apps and others.

Set up smart voice assistant

Whether you have Google Assistant or Alexa on your television, configuring the assistant correctly is important, especially if you use this type of assistant in your day to day. This way, you can access voice commands from your TVor control some of the smart devices you have at home.

Generally, all operating systems include a voice assistant setting when we start the TV for the first time. However, in the system settings we can find several options, depending on whether you have Google Assistant or Alexa.

In addition, on your mobile phone you should be able to detect your television via the Google Home or Alexa apps, in case it is compatible with any of the ecosystems mentioned. This will allow you to send content and interact very easily from your mobile phone or tablet.

Personalize your Smart TV with amazing wallpapers

One of the key aspects when it comes to personalizing your television is to leave a nice wallpaper in case your television is inactive (although the best thing, if you want to save energy, is to turn off the TV).

On Android TV we can use any image as wallpaper, although there may not be a better option than Aerial Dream or Aerial Views, an application that allows you to leave the background the amazing aerial images provided by Apple TV. In this way, we can enjoy beautiful landscapes in motion and in maximum resolution. To do this, all you have to do is download one of the apps mentioned on Google Play and configure them so that the system starts them by default when the TV is inactive.

In the case of Samsung and LG televisions, both manufacturers They have a dedicated section that acts as a ‘gallery’being able to expose multiple animated backgrounds as standard, or apply your own photographs.

Download Plex or Kodi to have a local media server

It’s all about apps essential if you have local audiovisual content and you want to watch it from any device via streaming. And it is that with the help of these applications you can do that and much more.

In the case of Android TV, you can install both Plex and Kodi, expanding the possibilities of your multimedia center at home. In this way you can play content in multiple formats, create a server thus accessing video and audio stored on a computer from your TVenjoy a wide variety of addons in the case of Kodi, and much more.

Samsung and LG TVs they also support the ability to download Plexalthough the same is not the case if you want to download Kodi, so you will have to settle for the first one mentioned.

Uninstall system apps that you are not going to use

Like the vast majority of operating systems, both on televisions and on mobile devices, tablets and computers, manufacturers usually include a number of pre-installed applications that are not usually very useful, or at least, surely you will find better alternatives to them. That is why you always have the option to delete them, or disable them, and thus save some space.

On Android TV you can do this easily, since you just have to go to the settings section, and in ‘Applications’, you will get a list with all the installed apps. Simply click on the one you want and click on the ‘Uninstall’ option to remove it from the system.

In LG televisions you can also do it easily, since you just have to access the list of applications and uninstall them. Of course, you must do it one by one. In webOS, navigate to the menu of all applications, hold down the ‘OK’ button and an option to uninstall the app will appear.

In the case of Samsung televisions, things are more complicated, since the manufacturer does not allow its users to uninstall the official applications that are installed as standard.

Assign apps to the buttons on your remote

You may download a ton of apps on your first day with the TV, but everyone has more or less a handful of must-have apps that they use on an almost daily basis. In this case, you can get direct access to your favorite apps with the push of a button on your remote control.

On Android TV this is easy to do, since all you have to do is download the Button Mapper app available in the Google Play store. In this way, with the app you can take care of customize access to some of the buttons on your remote control (including promotional buttons like Netflix, Disney+, etc.).

21 essential applications for your Smart TV and that we always recommend installing

WebOS also has a function to assign applications to some of the buttons on the remote. To do this, all you have to do is hold down the 0 button on your remote and you will go directly to the shortcut settings, being able to assign applications to each button. To open the app, all you have to do is hold down the assigned button. Unfortunately, the same is not true for Samsung TVs, so this is not a doable feature.

Take a speed test from your TV

It is true that to view streaming content you do not need to have the fastest Internet connection in the world. However, and more when it is content in 4K, having enough bandwidth will allow us to view that content without problems.

If you want to perform a speed test, there are applications that you can download to do so, although if you have Netflix, you can also take advantage of their network check tool to do a speed test. All you have to do is log in with your credentials, go to ‘Get help’ and press on ‘Network check’. When performing the test, it will tell you the connection speed you have on your television.

Another option you have is to use your web browser and do a quick speed test like the one provided by Google,, Ookla, among others.

Changing the launcher, one step further to personalize your Smart TV

If you are one of those who are not satisfied with the interface that your Smart TV presents, luckily You have options to modify its appearance at will. Of course, this option is only limited to televisions with Android TV, since other operating systems are more restrictive in terms of this function.

google launcher

In Google Play we can find a good handful of launchers to modify the appearance of our televisionAlthough for this, it requires a series of steps that involve changing the Android TV Home app so that the TV starts with the launcher that we have chosen. You can find out how to do it through our guide.

Among the featured launchers we can find some like FLauncher, Top TV Launcher 2, or HALauncheralong with others.

Install a web browser

There are televisions that do not include a web browser as standard. This is the case of some with Android TV, where in the initial list of applications we may not find this tool. And it is that thanks to the work of the applications and additional content, the use of a web browser may not be essential on a Smart TV todaybut it never hurts to have this tool among your applications.

tv bro

If you have a television with Android TV, some time ago we discussed some of the most prominent web browsers. However, we must highlight one above all: tv bro. It is a highly optimized browser for televisions, and with intuitive controls to make browsing the web as comfortable as possible with the remote control of the TV.

On the other hand, if you have a Samsung TV with TizenOS or LG with webOS, it will be a bit more complicated, since from the software itself you will not be able to use more than the default browser. The experience is not very far, although it is the only thing we can hold on to without depending on HDMI dongles, TV-Boxes and other external players.

LG’s technology that mixed plasma and LED

From 1997 to a good part of the first decade of the 2000s, plasma televisions conquered the high end for a long time. It was the most coveted technology when the user wanted to opt for a panel with the best image quality during that time. However, as we already mentioned in our article about these televisions, the LCD was little by little eating the toastsince its technology was evolving by leaps and bounds.

One of the most noticeable advantages of the LCD was also its lower electrical consumption, thus generating less heat and increasing its useful life. LG wanted to continue betting heavily on plasma televisions, although the manufacturer had to solve the problem of consumption and other aspects if they did not want to abandon the technology. This is how PLED panels were born in 2012.

PLED, an exclusive LG plasma vitamin

PLED comes from the acronym in English Pixel Light Emitting Display. According to the company, this technology brought the best of plasma and the best of LED televisionscombining both Technologys to try to offer a higher image quality, also drastically reducing power consumption at LCD panel values at the time.

When used, a PLED panel is like a vitaminized plasma panel. That is why it is good to remember how plasma panels work to explain their differences. And it is that the screen of a plasma television is formed by two layers of glass between which there are small cells with Xenon and Neon gas which, when excited by an electrical impulse, become plasma, causing the internal phosphor coating of the cell to glow.

What the PLED panel does compared to the plasma is reduce those cells, making each subpixel in a separate cell. This causes the gases to be at a much higher concentration. The cells also contain a denser layer of phosphor.

2023 is going to be a spectacular year in televisions: this is what the main manufacturers are preparing

This concentration means that much less electrical energy is needed to generate the plasma inside each cell. In this way the first advantages of PLED: Its electrical consumption is less than that of conventional plasma and is quite close to what LCD televisions consume.

By consuming less, it also generates less heat and its wear is less. Put at maximum power, a plasma television lasts around 50,000 hours before it starts to degrade. This figure is usually prorated with respect to what would be normal domestic consumption. The resulting figure is about 100,000 hours, which is the figure we all know.

In the case of pledthe highest concentration of Xenon and phosphor increases its useful life up to 80,000 hours of extreme use (as in an airport panel, for example) or 160,000 in a home.

Another of the advantages that PLED continues to maintain from plasma televisions are its self-emissive LEDs. In this way, each pixel can be turned on and off without being subjected to backlighting from a panel of LEDs on the back of the TV. This technology is similar to OLED, although they are not organic LED diodes.

This advantage makes PLED and plasma have better contrast than an LED panel. However, PLED also has an advantage over plasma: its screen is completely matte, reducing the reflection that can be generated by any point of light in the environment. And it is that by the very nature of plasma panels, its glass must always be bright. Sometimes this glare was reduced with anti-reflective coatings, but this diminished the glare emanating from the panel.

PLED also shares the advantages of LED panels

Although we are clear that PLED is like a kind of ‘super plasma’, this technology also includes characteristics of LED televisions, such as electronic image processing, this being the same as that of an LED panel. This eliminates the ‘motion blur’ sensation of plasma TVs in high-speed images, since like LED technology, PLEDs also have three image processors that interleave frames.

Despite the reduction in consumption, PLED screens continued to consume slightly more than LCD panels. In addition, they share the same problem as plasma screens: the ‘burn’ effect when playing still images for a long time.

The OLED was peeking around the corner

Although it was a great advance over plasma panels, the technology did not fully catch on. In addition, they were presented in a context in which the OLED was taking more and more shape (although they were still very expensive to produce) and LCD-LED panels were much cheaper to produce. In addition, with these Technologys the use of elements such as phosphorus and gases was completely eliminated, depending more and more on electronic and digital processing.

In fact, if you asked LG at the time what panels were going to be the future, the company was quick to respond with OLED. And indeed, today it is the technology in which LG has bet the most in recent years.

so you can configure this useful help

Although our star use is to set timers, music or ask for the time and time, you can ask Alexa for many more things, some as useful as serving as a guardian in your day-to-day life: perhaps if you have left a tap running, if it the washing machine or dishwasher has finished. If you did not know or are not very sure how to make Alexa act on beeps or water, keep reading.

A little over a year ago, Amazon added a series of most useful improvements and functionalities for the home: the audible and in-person detection capabilities. Specifically, we refer to this pair of algorithms:

  • Water Running or running water detection. Thus, by listening to the environment, it is able to find out if there is water running around the equipment, for example because we have left a tap open or because there is a leak.
  • Appliance Beeping Detection. In this case, it refers to the ability of the assistant to listen to the different beeps produced by your electrical appliances when they finish their functions, thus allowing us to act accordingly.

What happens at that moment? If you have developed the corresponding routine, you will receive a message on your mobile. In the first case, it is also possible to program a notice that warns that we are spending more water than normal brushing our teeth, for example. The second is especially useful with household appliances that do not have to be smart, such as microwaves, ovens, refrigerators. So, if you leave the fridge open, Alexa will tell you goat.

How to configure these functions

To benefit from these functions it is necessary to go to the section of the Alexa routines from the application. There you can configure the routine you want so that Alexa executes automatic actions for daily milestones, for example, that the washing machine program has finished.

In the Amazon Alexa application, tap on Further, which you will find in the lower right corner. There select routines and click on the “+” in the upper right corner to create a new Routine.

Alexa 2

There are four steps. The first is to name it. After in “When” Choose “sound detection“. Within that option you will see both options beyond the beep or the water such as snoring, crying baby, coughing or barking dog that can give you new ideas, for example a lullaby sounds when your little one cries. Then choose which device and in what time range. Finally you will have to add the action you want. So, if you want it to reach your mobile, choose “Notification” (yes, you will have to have the notifications of said application activated). However, in “alexa says” You could also choose what the Amazon voice assistant’s response would be by simply typing it in “Custom”.
